Dog Days in the Desert Summer Camp

ABOUT DOG DAYS

The Dog Days in the Desert Summer Program is designed to give children a new perspective on caring for domestic animals, and includes an exploration of animal behavior, cultural influences, creativity and personal responsibility. Participants involved in these programs will enjoy a variety of activities and outings which stress an appreciation for non-human species and the care and preservation of our natural world. The philosophical focus deals with how compassion and respect for all living creatures cultivates a peaceful existence and a non-violent society.

The Dog Days theme changes yearly. This year’s theme is to be announced at a later date.

Our studies include hands-on work with different animal species including cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, etc.; classroom lessons; workshops with professionals concerned with protecting animals; and creative activities which can incorporate art, drama, music and games. Our students will also be challenged as a group to create a community service project for the benefit of animals.

DOG DAYS SCHEDULE: The Dog Days program is divided up according to the age of the participants: 6 to 10 years (Junior Program) and 11 to 14 years (Senior Program). Each program will meet four days a week for two consecutive weeks. Activities will begin at 9:00 am and end at 4:00 pm.

Junior Program: Mondays thru Thursdays, June 7th through June 17th, 2010

Senior Program: Mondays thru Thursdays, June 28th through July 8th, 2010

LOCATION: All programs will be held at the Humane Society’s Companions for Life Center. This facility is located at 3465 E. Kleindale, just to the southeast of the HSSA main campus.
