As a founding member of the Animal Cruelty Taskforce of Southern Arizona, HSSA has always taken a leadership role in combating violence toward non-human life. In 2006, HSSA greatly expanded its cruelty prevention services by establishing an animal cruelty investigator position. This staff member acts as a conduit for public law enforcement working to save animals from abuse.

HSSA’s animal cruelty investigator works hand-in-hand with law enforcement, including all local agencies, fire departments, Arizona Livestock Investigators, and Pima Animal Care Center authorities to provide a seamless response to cruelty calls. Services through this branch of our department include professional training seminars, public outreach, law enforcement support services, emergency medical care and fostering abused animals, and evidence collection.

Our program allows the public to provide information on suspected cruelty and neglect, as well as concerns about breeders, animal vendors and other related issues. Our Cruelty in Common educational program provides a variety of programs for adults and juveniles to address these concerns, including court-mandated courses for those found guilty to animal cruelty.
