The Humane Society's Education
& Community Outreach Department offers a volunteer program for H.I.P members ages 12
to 18. Our Youth Internship Program is an opportunity for you
to work in a more independent atmosphere at the HSSA
shelter and during special events. Interns will work alongside
staff to help educate the public about the problems and challenges
that affect companion animals in our community.
Typical Duties of the Education Intern:
- Cleaning cages, kennels and helping with general animal
care duties with adult supervision.
- Assisting with various office duties as needed, including
data entry, filing, answering phones and more.
- Helping with Educational events during weekends, evenings
or whenever necessary.
- Observing, learning and practicing standard duties typical
of a humane animal shelter.

Personal Qualities of an Education Intern:
- You must be between 12 and 18 years of age.
- You must join and actively participate in Hand-In-Paw Club
events for at least 6 months prior to applying for an internship.
- Reliability, organizational skills, and the ability to work
independently.
- A flexible nature which will allow you to perform a variety
of duties as needed (internships are not all about petting
puppies and kittens.)
