The Humane Society's Education & Community Outreach Department offers a volunteer program for H.I.P members ages 12 to 18. Our Youth Internship Program is an opportunity for you to work in a more independent atmosphere at the HSSA shelter and during special events. Interns will work alongside staff to help educate the public about the problems and challenges that affect companion animals in our community.

Typical Duties of the Education Intern:

  • Cleaning cages, kennels and helping with general animal care duties with adult supervision.

  • Assisting with various office duties as needed, including data entry, filing, answering phones and more.

  • Helping with Educational events during weekends, evenings or whenever necessary.

  • Observing, learning and practicing standard duties typical of a humane animal shelter.

Personal Qualities of an Education Intern:

  • You must be between 12 and 18 years of age.

  • You must join and actively participate in Hand-In-Paw Club events for at least 6 months prior to applying for an internship.

  • Reliability, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently.

  • A flexible nature which will allow you to perform a variety of duties as needed (internships are not all about petting puppies and kittens.)
