Earth Day at the Tucson Botanical Gardens >

In honor of Earth Day HIP members and their parents spent the morning at the Tucson Botanical Gardens learning about the gardens history, rain water harvesting, and conservation of the gardens and our environment.

Our tour guide and Education Coordinator Lisa informed us of some of the native species of birds, lizards and other animals that live and visit the gardens. She also had HIP members go on a caterpillar hunt in the butterfly garden.  We were lucky to see some beautifully colored caterpillars that were hiding under plant leaves.

HIP members all went home with botanical gardens coloring books and a starfish cactus to plant at home.

· Chinese New Year Celebration >

Happy Chinese New Year!  In honor of the Chinese New Year, the HIP club met to bring in the Year of the Boar.  Set to begin on February 18th, the Chinese New Year is based on the yearly cycles of the moon using 12 animal signs much like the monthly horoscopes in the western hemisphere. HIP members were invited to learn about the traditions of this very popular springtime festival.

Participants created their own Chinese dragons, painted their Chinese animal symbols and made fabric fortune cookies with their own creative fortunes inside. Aside from fun activities for kids and parents, attendees were treated to traditional Chinese New Year snacks, and story telling by a local TUSD teacher, on how the 12 animal signs were chosen to be part of the Chinese calendar.  Each child also went home with their own Chinese horoscope and Chinese prizes and giveaways.

On Saturday, August 5th, members of the Humane Society's Hand-In-Paw club were invited to the H.I.P’s 10th birthday celebration.
Members were treated to an afternoon with a live DJ, rides on the wave runner, craft activities, caricatures, Funtasticks giveaways, raffle prizes and who could forget cake and presents.

This event gave Hand-In-Paw kids club members the opportunity to meet other young compassionate kids, make new freinds, socialize and have a blast all while celebrating a remarkable milestone of reaching 10 years of success. The 10th birthday celebration was the highest attended HIP event ever.

· H.I.P.'s Urban Wildlife Roundup >

On Saturday, January 28th, the kids of the Humane Society's Hand-In-Paw club got up-close & personal with several examples of southern Arizona's favorite wildlife.

Not only did the kids get to meet our friends from Animal Experts, but als shook hands with a Sonoran Desert toad, a Gila monster, tarantula, and more!

It was a unique opportunity to not only see examples of wildlife from our region, but also to learn more about them and how to live in harmony with them in our growing city.
