“The Bobbie and Becky Bell Friends of the Animals Program” is dedicated to helping animals who are in need of our compassion and assistance. This program epitomizes the mission and vision of the Humane Society of Southern Arizona where one day, no healthy companion animal will be euthanized for lack of a home, lack of space, or lack of compassion. Although there are many ways to contribute and many areas with which to get involved in HSSA, The Bobbie and Becky Bell Friends of the Animals Program concentrates its efforts in 5 main areas:
- Education –Our Education & Community Outreach Department's free educational programs reach over 20,000 people each year through classroom visitations, special events, summer programs, internships, volunteerism, literature and resources.
- Second Chance - Funds specifically to provide the medical care and rehabilitation needed to nurse victims of cruelty, negelect, or other misfortune back to health and placed in a loving home.
- Pet Visitation - A program designed to share animals with people of all ages in facilities such as convalescent homes, hospitals, mental health centers, hospices, children’s facilities and schools.
- Animal Cruelty - The Animal Cruelty Taskforce works with local law enforcement to investigate and prosecute instances of animal cruelty, and to educate the public on how to prevent it.
- Lifesavers Spay & Neuter - A fund specifically to spay or neuter more pets in our community to prevent more unwanted companion animals.

About the Bell Family >
Bobbie Bell (1926-2004) was a teacher at the California School for the Deaf in Riverside, California. In addition to her 30-year plus career as an educator, she was a devoted wife, a caring mother, and an avid pet lover.
Bobbie’s husband, Edward Thomas Bell, Jr. (1925-1993), was also an educator who taught for over 30 years in the Alvord School District. The couple moved to Riverside, California in 1953, and their marriage lasted 45 years before Edward passed away in 1993.
In addition to being extremely dedicated teachers, the Bell’s were the proud parents of two children: Eddie, who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1975, and Becky. Dogs (Pooch, Lucky, Bruin and Beau) were always an important part of the Bell household. Bobbie also adored cats as a child, and shared her final years with her beloved Persian, Buddy.
Becky Bell was born in Riverside, California, and has been a Tucson resident since 1985. She is the former Head Women’s Tennis Coach at the University of Arizona and is currently the Director of the Edward T. Bell Jr. C.A.T.S. Life Skills Program in the UA Athletics Department. Becky’s dog, Dali, is a very cute and very spoiled Lhasa Apso!
